Sample Work

I live 15 minutes from the Torpedo Factory. I am a potter, and I work in my home studio as well as at the Factory. My work now is mostly functional. I make objects for the table; some I throw on the wheel, and others I hand-build. I enjoy the fact that the surfaces of my pieces show the processes that they gone through. The atmosphere created in my gas kiln and in the wood kilns in which I fire my work leave their marks on the surfaces of my pots. The effects of the fire capture my imagination.

The fire is the unifying element in my work. The transient effects of the flames are "frozen" on the pieces, which embody the physical changes that they have undergone. The many variations in the firing process give each piece its unique character; I am always excited when unloading a kiln. I envision pottery as a way of sharing. Pots should invite you to use them. Each pot develops a story, like a favorite cereal bowl or a tea bowl that is used for many years, and is accompanied by memories. Using something you consider beautiful can be a source of enrichment and joy.
