Whiskers, Wags meet the Wild Things

Clay is catering to owners of spoiled schnauzers, prissy pussycats, equine appreciators and crazy bird watchers with the Kiln Club’s annual animals show.

Dedicated to fans of fur and feathers, sculptural and functional critter-based ceramics are featured in the center ring of the clay circus of ‘Wild and Domestic.’ Need a fish dish, bird bowl or simply crave critter clay? Paws here!

Rover likes red so he can scarf snacks from a handmade feeder while finicky Fluffy tastes tuna on a sweet little saucer. Bruiser’s bon appetit can come with witty squirrels or tempting tibulas and while meddlesome mice populate pet bowls for Puss.

Our flock has not gone South for the Winter as birds perch on vases, glide across dishes and preen in statuesque representations. Bring home an artistic abode for chickadee season or spice up breakfast with egg-inspired salt and pepper shakers.

Textured artistry and dynamic gesture expresses character in canine, equine and bovine sculptures. Bears, buffaloes and elephants lumber along with coats of compelling crackled and iridescent raku glazing. Shiny hippos are accessorized with hearts, bows and loving details.

Handpainted platters and zany sculptures are found down the rabbit hole as cotton-tailed critters sit in boats, graze beneath foliage and embody the cuddliest in clay.

Friendly to the four-footed, hurry, scurry or trot to the Torpedo Factory Art Center’s Scope Gallery. Better than safaris or SeaWorld, this zoo’s for you as artistic imagination collides with the animal kingdom.

The Kiln Club show runs March 2 to 29, Monday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with Thursdays open until 9 p.m. The gallery is located at 105 North Union Street, ground floor, Alexandria, VA. 22314.
